Mockingjay: Part 1, the third novel-based installment in the Hunger Games movies, was a huge success grossing at around 56 million dollars on its opening day. At one point during the film Jennifer Lawrence, the protagonist, sings a song titled "The Hanging Tree," written by the author of the books, Suzanne Collins. For a song that was sung by a person that claims she is a "tone-deaf singer," I'm sure that Jennifer Lawrence was shocked by the continuing success of this song. Now not only is she an Oscar-winning actress, she is also a successful singer. The soundtrack for the film had reached number 40 on Billboard's Top 200 list, and "The Hanging Tree" hit number 10 on Billboard's Pop Song chart. The song in the movie was meant to incite rebellion and to move audiences, and did that and more. Lawrence has reportedly said that she hates singing in front of people. I think it's really awesome that she was able to perform this song, and be so successful doing it. It's always a nice surprise to see so much positive commotion happen from songs that were sung in movies by unexpected actors and actresses. |

I recently had the pleasure to read The Brand Gap by Marty Neumeier. It’s a very well organized book with great models and examples that really make his point and ideas clear. Having not put much thought into it before, this book really opened my eyes to all the processes and many facets of branding within an organization. There is much more behind the scenes research, planning, and thought that go into the creation and maintenance of a company’s brand and Neumeier seems to cover the outlines of it all. There are five disciplines of branding mentioned that are critical to success, and they all seem so obviously necessary now that they’ve all been laid out. These are to differentiate, collaborate, Innovate, validate, and cultivate. By threading these five necessities into your brand you virtually cannot fail. If you have any interest in what a brand actually is, and how it’s formed, give this book a read. You will learn something, and end up genuinely enjoying this book!
